Elliot Rodger killing spree 'could have been stopped,' claims top criminal profiler

The murder of six students during a stabbing and shooting spree by British born Elliot Rodger last month could have been prevented, according to forensic psychiatrist Dr Park Dietz, one of the world’s top criminal profilers. The killer, the son of English film director Peter Rodger, had posted a series of videos online before he went on the rampage.

In one video, as well as a 141-page manifesto detailing how he had planned his attack, Rodger tried to justify his actions by citing his rejection by the opposite sex. “I’m 22 years old and still a virgin, never even kissed a girl... I will punish all of you for it.”
In the last video he made, Rodger declared: “Tomorrow is the Day of Retribution, the day I will have my revenge against humanity, against all of you.” He went on to stab three men to death in his apartment, before shooting three of his fellow students and injuring 13 others, in Santa Barbara, California. The 22-year-old student then turned the gun on himself.
Dr Dietz, an expert witness in high profile cases such as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, the Unabomber, and the Columbine school massacre, commented: “There is no question in my mind that in a society that shared data, that had a good protocol for law enforcement to make use of that data, and that had adequate mental health resources, such crimes could be prevented.”

As the National Assembly mulls the idea of making local content law for the aviation industry, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has said the association supports the idea by the National Assembly, describing it as a right step in the right direction.
The body stated this in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Bunmi I. Gindeh, and made available to journalists at weekend at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.
Gindeh said that NAAPE was happy because when enacted, it would make it compulsory for both local and international airlines to employ Nigerian pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers.

LG boss makes case for women in agriculture

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ibadan North-East Local Government Area of Oyo State, Najeem Oluokun, has attributed the underperformance of agriculture in the country to lack of access to the resources and opportunities women need to be more productive.
He made the remark at the Role Modeling Event organised by a Senior Research Officer, National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), Ibadan, Folasade Adeboyejo at the Wesley College of Science, Elekuro, Ibadan.
The Chairman, who noted that access to such facilities by women was not equal to that of their male counterparts, and maintained that “the gender gap imposes real costs on society in terms of lost agricultural output, food security and economic growth”.

Gunmen kill two, kidnap 7-yr-old in Bauchi

Unknown gunmen suspected to be armed bandits attacked a filling station at Giade Local Government Area of Bauchi State, killing two people and injuring two others.
The gunmen who reportedly escaped through a nearby bush, carted away huge amount of money.
When contacted, Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), DSP Mohammed Haruna, confirmed the incident.
“On 13/6/2014 at about 6 p.m, unknown gunmen stormed Zunnuraini filling station, Giade, shot sporadically, killed two people and injured two others.

Popular gospel singer, Kefee died on Friday morning.
The singer, who was reportedly pregnant, fell into a coma while on a flight to Chicago, in the United States of America, where she was working, making videos amongst other things.
The plane was forced make an emergency landing and she was rushed into the Intensive Care Unit of an hospital in Los Angeles.
Sources close to the family confirmed to Channels Television that the ‘Kokoroko’ crooner had passed on.

Iraq’s Top Shi’it Cleric Tells Followers To Fight Militants! (can you imagine)

raq’s most senior Shi’ite Muslim cleric on Friday urged followers to take up arms against a full-blown Sunni militant insurgency to topple Shi’ite Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki.

The call is widely seen as an escalation to a conflict that threatens civil war and a possible break-up of the country.
In a rare intervention at Friday prayers in the holy city of Kerbala, a message from Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who is the highest religious authority for Shi’ites in Iraq, said people should unite to fight back against a lightning advance by militants from the radical Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Fighters under the black flag of ISIL are sweeping south towards the capital Baghdad in a campaign to recreate a mediaeval caliphate carved out of fragmenting Iraq and Syria that has turned into a widespread rebellion against Maliki.
“People who are capable of carrying arms and fighting the terrorists in defence of their country … should volunteer to join the security forces to achieve this sacred goal,” Sheikh Abdulmehdi al-Karbalai said while delivering Sistani’s message.
Those killed fighting ISIL militants would be martyrs, he said, as the faithful chanted in acknowledgement.
U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday threatened military strikes against ISIL, highlighting the gravity of the group’s threat to redraw borders in an oil-rich region which is sending shockwaves through the Middle East.

Nigeria: Lagos Seminar to Enhance Nollywood Movie Distribution

Lagos — THE Nollywood Studies Centre has announced plans to hold a conference on the Distribution of Nigerian Films to explore ways of enhancing the distribution of such material.
The two-day conference will be held from June 26 , at the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University Lagos.
The proposed conference is aimed at studying the various issues that currently militate against effective distribution in the Nigerian film industry.

Nigeria: The Chibok Girls - Nigeria's Side of the Story

The kidnapping of schoolgirls from the small town of Chibok in Borno state, north-eastern Nigeria, close to two months ago has caused an international uproar in condemnation of the slow response by Nigerian authorities.
Nigeria's leaders and security services have been accused of sitting back and ignoring the Boko Haram insurgency in the country. Their initial response to the kidnappings, as seen by outsiders, could have been considered slow and inadequate - that is true.
But what other factors are affecting the situation in Nigeria, particularly in the northeast of the country? Why has it been so difficult for President Goodluck Jonathan's government to fight the scourge of Boko Haram, which has infiltrated so many sectors of Nigerian society?
Firstly, in looking at the kidnapping of the schoolgirls on 14 April, it seems that very little is known about what really happened. Figures of '276 girls,' 'nearly 300' and 'over 200' have been bandied about. How many girls were there really? and how many have escaped or returned to their parents?
The ignorance around this figure is indicative of the way in which this terrible kidnapping has been shrouded in rumour, uncertainty and hearsay. There seems to be a complete lack of communication - or, at the very least, very poor information management - about what has happened and what is being done.
Borno state, where the girls were kidnapped, is a vast terrain of 70 000 square kilometres - almost the size of a country like Ireland.
There are over 30 000 schools in the state, making it impossible for the authorities to have stationed security police at every school, despite Boko Haram's threats.
It is also a vastly underdeveloped area with inadequate infrastructure, and for decades little attention has been paid to economic development in the region. However, a proposed plan in the new budget - a sort of new 'Marshall Plan' announced by the Jonathan government - will hopefully promote development.
One should also ask: has the government really done nothing to try and get the girls back? Insiders close to the search say that a lot has been done to find the girls, and that they have, in fact, been located. Many actors - both from inside and outside Nigeria - are involved in the search.
