Boko Haram: It’s now fire for fire – Jonathan

Shekarau & Jonathan

Presi-dent Goodluck Jonathan has sent a strong message to the Boko Haram terror group that the Nigerian government would no longer treat it with kid gloves.
Speaking in Windhoek, Namibia during bilateral talks with President Hifikepunye Pohamba at the Conference Hall of the Namibia State House, President Jonathan solicited the support of other countries in the fight against terrorism, saying  a terror attack on one country is an attack on all countries.
He said: “The issue of global terror is worrisome and in Nigeria, we believe that a terror attack anywhere in the world is a terror attack on everyone.
“It may be more in one country compared to the other. For instance, in the North Eastern part of Nigeria, we are having incidence of terror in three states out of 36 states.
“Initially, we handled it with kid gloves but now we have decided to be a little more forceful because we must thrash out these terror groups. We must not allow them to continue to slow down economic growth in that part of the country.
“With the terror attacks in that part of the country, the rest of the country feel it because Nigerians live everywhere. In these other parts, there is always the fear that if you do not tackle it, it will spread to other parts. We will work together to ensure that terror attack is stamped out globally and in Nigeria we are committed.”

Jonathan challenges court’s jurisdiction to reverse Sanusi’s suspension

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, challenged the jurisdiction of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to entertain a suit seeking to reverse the suspension of governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

In a preliminary objection filed against the suit, Jonathan insisted that the ousted CBN governor ought to have taken his case to the National Industrial Court, NIC, contending that in line with section 254 (c) (1a) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, only the industrial court had the statutory powers to meddle into any dispute between an employer and his employee.

Similarly, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, who were both joined in the suit by Sanusi as 2nd and 3rd defendants, respectively, urged the high court to strike it out for want of jurisdiction.

Earlier, Sanusi had through his lawyer, Dr. Kola Awodehin, SAN, maintained that there was never a time employer/employee relationship existed between him and President Jonathan, adding that he was never an employee of the Federal Government.

Besides, Awodehin, SAN, urged the court to consolidate and hear together both his client’s originating summons and the three preliminary objections against the suit, a request that was vehemently opposed by all the defendants.

Though President Jonathan through his lawyer, Dr. Fabian Ajodu, SAN, expressed his intention to file an affidavit to reply Sanusi’s contention that he was never an employee of the federal government, he urged the court to hear and determine the issue of jurisdiction first.

In his submission, counsel to the AGF, Chief Mike Ozhokome, SAN, told the court that there was need to also counter Sanusi’s claim that he was still in charge of the CBN, considering that he had not handed over to Mrs. Sarah Alade who, he said, was illegally appointed as the acting CBN governor by Jonathan.

“My Lord, all the defendants have filed their notices of preliminary objection, challenging the jurisdiction of this court to hear this matter; it is our humble application that the objection be taken together with the main suit,” Awodehin said.

Patriotism:Pastor Tunde Bakare Rejects N12 M Confab Allowance

Fiery man of God, Pastor Tunde Bakare, the Founder of Latter Rain Assembly and former running mate to Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on the platform of Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, in the 2011 presidential election, has said that he will not be part of the proposed N12 million earmarked to be paid to each member of the National Conference which was inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan on 18 March, 2014.
Pastor Bakare who has been a thorn in the flesh of successive governments due to his scathing criticism of their policies, was nominated by his home state, Ogun State, as one of the 492 delegates to the Confab with the government announcing that they will be paid N4 million every month, for the three months the conference will last, amounting to N12 million.
But Pastor Bakare said he decided to be part of the delegates as part of his service to his country and as such, he sees no reason why he should collect such huge sum to render a service for his fatherland.
He told members of his church during a service:
A friend of mine called me that he heard on the radio that ‘Pastor Bakare had accepted to go, that his own fee is N12m’. Pastor Bakare will not take a kobo in the National Conference.
I will not take a penny. It has nothing to do with others; that is by choice. We go with integrity of heart, it is not money. The God of heaven will prosper us.
What I say here is what I will do there. I do not say others should do it, but I intend to do that so that our heart can remain pure. That does not mean the hearts of others are not pure but I don’t want anybody to think in any slight manner that the motive is this.
This is the moment we have been waiting for; for this end I was born.
Nigeria will be saved, Nigeria will be changed, and Nigeria will become great.
What do you make of Pastor Bakare’s show of patriotism?

How Nigerian undergraduate was killed in Ghana over money

On February 19th, the body of a Nigerian student studying in Ghana was found.. Godwin Awogbo (pictured above), a 300level student of Social Sciences at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana was killed by unknown person/s and his body dumped by the roadside. Now the full story is out. According to a report by Tribune, Godwin was killed over money. Read the full story below
February 20 was no doubt one of the saddest days for the family of Mr Fred Awogbo. Their son, 18-year-old Godwin Awogbo, was brutally killed. His body had been found with some his internal organs gorged out, with his hands and legs tied.
Godwin Awogbo’s lifeless body was reportedly found on the school campus. For days, everyone seemed to be clueless about what could have prompted such a brutal death. While the thoughts of Godwin being a cultist came to the minds of many, his friends, however, were quick to assert that Godwin was a cool-headed person with no such connection.

It would be recalled that Godwin Awogbo’s death made it the fourth Nigerian student to lose their life in the space of four months in Ghana. This has not only posed the question of how safe Nigerian students are in the Gold Coast, but it has also raised the question of how much university managements take an interest in the well-being of their foreign students, most of whom are teenagers.
